GENERAL PURPOSE:

The Paramedic/EMT-A is a member of the Ambulance crew of the Emergency Medical Services of the SIEHS. EMT-A plays a crucial role in providing lifesaving interventions/medications to the patients/customers that use the service. The EMT-A is the Team Leader in the ALS (Advanced Life Support) & ACLS (Advance Cardiac Life Support) Units, taking charge of each situation and providing the necessary guidance and instruction to the Ambulance team.

The EMT-A is also responsible for maintaining the quality standards and bench mark service to all patients/customers. The EMT-A can carry out medical interventions as per already defined SOP’s of the SIEHS at the EMT-A level. The EMT-A can be a mentor for newly hired Ambulance Staff.

Qualification: BSc.N / Post RN BSc.N / MSc. N

Experience: 2 -3 years working in a Healthcare setup in domain of patient handling, care and management

Age: Minimum 25 years

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES & AUTHORITIES:

It is required that the Paramedic/EMT-A displays a high level of discipline in all aspects of work, reports for duty smartly dressed in the uniform provided by the Sindh Rescue & Medical Services and freshly shaven. For those Paramedic/EMT-A’s who holds the beard may do so, but it must be maintained with a neat appearance.

  • Maintains professional and cordial relations with co-workers including Supervisors, Coordinators, EMT’s-B, EVO’s and other support staff.
  • Takes over the ambulance after duly completing the handing over and taking over procedure at the start of each shift.
  • Cross checks and signs off the taking-over sheet, filled in by the EMT-B, for all the medicines, consumables, instruments and appliances on board the Ambulance in the patient cabin.
  • While taking charge, makes sure all the reusable equipment and the Ambulance itself is disinfected/sterilized and makes sure of the same after handling each patient.
  • Performs the duties of SRMS with honesty and dedication, in line with the SRMS policies.
  • Administers medicines and performs procedures required for care of the patient being treated/ transported by himself or under the supervision and instructions of an EMO (if available).
  • Must display a professional yet sympathetic/courteous behavior with the patient and attendants.
  • Documents all patient care, assessments, BLS/ALS/ACLS skills and all service reports in a timely fashion. Documentation shall be legible and accurate.
  • Shall treat and transfer the patient from the scene of an accident or home, in the ambulance and after arriving at the hospital transfer to the relevant facility, such as ER/ICU/HDU of the hospital. He will be assisted in this activity by the EMT-B/EVO.
  • Collaborate as much as possible with hospital staff such as Doctors/Nurses to facilitate the treatment of the patient and must ensure Transfer of Care by handing over the patient to a Doctor, or the most Senior Staff member in the absence of a Doctor.
  • During the transfer of a patient in any condition, the EMT-A must be seated in the rear cabin of the Ambulance at all times and should not leave the patient under the supervision of an EMT-B.
  • All observations and interventions administered to the patient en-route to the Hospital should be clearly given to Doctor or Senior Staff Nurse at the particular Hospital of delivery via a Verbal Report. For critical cases that require ICU/Ventilator, a copy of the Critical transport Form will be handed over to the responsible staff.
  • At the end of each shift the EMT-A must ensure proper handing over of the Ambulance.
  • Is responsible to accurately update the record of all the medicines/ consumables used during the shift and provide the list to the station coordinator. Also make sure all the reusable equipment is disinfected/ sterilized according to protocol.
  • In the absence of the patient’s ability to choose a Hospital or relevant facility, the EMT-A would need to make the decision.
  • In case an emergency is assigned to the Paramedic/EMT-A close to the time of shift change, the EMT-A must immediately attend the call upon the directive of the Control & Command Center.
  • Should collaborate with teams/members of other services such as Fire Fighting Units, Police etc.
  • Is required to participate in all EMT-A Refresher Programs conducted by the EMT-A Academy.
  • May be called upon by the SRMS to perform special duties in case of various social/private events such as religious processions, seminars and sports events.
  • The EMT-A can be asked to deliver on-the-job training of newly hired ambulance staff, ensuring they are competent in skills and activities like SRMS/Ambulance Operations, Manual Handling, Ambulance Disinfection, Handing & Taking Over, Transfer with great degree of Care, Medical Equipment Usage/Troubleshooting/Care, Operational Policies and Procedures, Documentation, Wireless Communication, MOUs with different hospitals/organizations.
  • They may be asked to volunteer for conducting BLS/CPR, First Aid trainings of internal and external candidates.
  • They may be asked to volunteer as an Instructor for Layman CPR program.
  • Cross checks and signs off the taking-over sheet, filled in by the EMT-B, for all the medicines, consumables, instruments and appliances on board the Ambulance in the patient cabin.
  • EMT-A needs to be update the record electronically and monitor the activity of data recording by subordinates
  • He must be ensured disinfection of ambulance after every intervention. (Low/Intermediate/High)

WORK HOURS:

  • SRMS is working in 3 shifts. Morning and Evening Shift comprises of 7 hours of duty while Night Shift comprises of 10 hours. The EMT-A may be rotated in these shifts, without repetition, as per need of the SRMS Operations.
  • In unfavorable circumstances, the time of shift may be prolonged.
  • Except in cases of emergency, the Ambulances are moved from key points to proceed to the station 15 minutes before the end of each shift in order to facilitate handing over-taking over process.
  • Late arrival is not allowed as it leads to interruptions in running the SRMS efficiently.
